Synopsis
“A soundscape is any collection of sounds, almost like a painting is a collection of visual attractions,” says composer R. Murray Schafer. “When you listen carefully to the soundscape it becomes quite miraculous.” David New’s portrait of the renowned composer becomes a lesson unto itself, gracing viewers (and listeners) with a singular moment of interactive subjectivity. This film was produced for the 2009 Governor General’s Performing Arts Award.
A Thousand Thieves…
Filmmaker Matthu Placek’s Tempestuous New Video for Trixie Whitley’s Soaring Ballad
A heartbroken but defiant Trixie Whitley faces a storm of emotions in the video for her new song, “A Thousand Thieves,” directed by filmmaker Matthu Placek. The daughter of blues legend Chris Whitley, Trixie grew up between Belgium and New York in a family of passionate musicians, artists and writers, learning drums, guitar and piano at an early age. For the past two years the singer-songwriter has been recording and touring with Black Dub, the band of super-producer Daniel Lanois who worked with Brian Eno on U2’s The Joshua Tree and has produced records for artists like Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Willie Nelson. Currently soloing across Europe, Whitley caught Placek’s attention with her soulful, smoky vocals and sensitive tunes while performing at New York salon Le Poisson Rouge. “All of a sudden, she lets out her voice and I just flew against the wall,” says the former V magazine and Vogue photographer. They bonded that night, and soon Whitley was standing in a Balenciaga dress singing into four high-powered fans over a 14-hour day to the single take. “She really knows what she wants,” says Placek. “You’d think she’s this shrinking violet—and she is––but she is strong. She’s very true to herself.”
SoundCloud CEO Alexander Ljung on the company hitting 10 million users
Audio sharing platform SoundCloud has announced that it has signed up a total of 10 million users, rapid acceleration in takeup for the startup which launched in 2008 and had just 3 million users in February 2011.
The Berlin-based startup announced 5 million users in June 2011, meaning that the total number of registered users has doubled in the space of seven months. We caught up with CEO and co-founder Alexander Ljung at the DLD conference in Munich, Germany, today, to find out what was driving this growth. He explained that its mobile apps (with a total of 5 million downloads) and developer ecosystem (over 10,000 apps either available or in development) are helping to push the growth.

BTW… I was recently in my local Guitar Center to get a Mic Boom/Stand, Pop Filter, cables, etc… and they do this cheesy little demo… where they hold a lighter behind a nylon mesh pop filter and tell you to blow it out… which you do immediately on the first breath… then they put it behind a metal screen pop filter and tell you to do the same… and you can’t… sold!! — of course the metal pop screen is like 3 times the cost of the nylon one… but, it’s hard to argue with the result of their little demo…
